Zen and the Art of Being a Pooh Bear
stored in: ADHD

I'm going to start off with a topic I think is very important, especially for my add brothers and sisters.

Maybe I've got that backwards. You decide.

Everything today is rush, rush, rush.

Go, go, go.

Do, do, do.

Be, be, be.

Am I really the only one getting tired? C'mon! I don't buy it.

I think a lot more folks out there are sick of "the grind", but don't want to admit it in fear of being perceived a "failure". Blah, blah, blah ...

What is it that we're all trying to accomplish? We've got more gizmo's and gadgets and automobiles and sweaters than any of us can use. We can communicate via email, cell phone, text message ... heck, we can't even get away from each other ... and we're BUSIER than ever.

"Hello. Wait just one minute. I'm busy. I'll be right back!"

It has become that being busy is more important than actually accomplishing something. I think being busy is wasting time, but then again, what do I know?

We have at our disposal these amazing technological powers, that allow just one individual to do the work it would take an entire corporation to accomplish just a few short years ago.

Yet we're BUSY! Busier than ever! And that's GOOD!

So we're told ...

Really?

Says who?

Tony Robbins?

Man ... I wouldn't live his lifestyle if he paid me $10 million per year to do it!

Get out of bed fast! Exercise! Work! I'm starting to throw up already, so let me get to where this post started ...

There was a point a few weeks ago that it hit me that the add was for real, so I started looking into it further. I wanted to know more, learn more, and interact with others who were similar. One of the biggest mainstream sources for information is ADDitude Magazine. They have a good website with lots of good information, but I kept coming across a consistent theme.

Rush, rush, rush. Go, go, go. Do, do, do. Be, be, be!

Get yourself a timer and record how long it takes you to do things and set alarms, and organize your lists, and track the details, and yackety, yackety, YACK!

Do these people have any idea who their audience is?

I'd say obviously not.

Here's Something I've Learned:

I've been seeing a shrink for awhile to help me put things into perspective. She's absolutely brilliant! I'm so lucky to have someone so talented. Anyways, two (2) years and two months ago, I weighed 215 pounds. At only 5'9", that means I was FAT!

Eighteen (18) months later, I weighed a mere 160 pounds, which is what I weigh today (26 months later). In fact, I'd like to gain about 5 or 6 pounds.

Would you like to know how I did it? Would you to know The 3 Laws of Weight-Loss? Maybe you'd prefer to learn about it in 7 Easy Steps!

Or I could just give you this AMAZING secret ...

Here's what I did: I decided to lose weight and get down to about 165 pounds. No pressure. No time frame. No specific meals. And no required time for exercise. I didn't stop drinking beer and eating pizza, nor did I start eating tofu and rabbit food. I simply made a decision.

I know ... I know ... I've had countless people tell me I'm full of it. There's no way! I'm crazy! They've all got some "new" diet and/or exercise program that if they just stick to it, they're gonna lose the weight this time. They're trying. WORKING REALLY HARD!

Yet here I am, 65 pounds lighter, wearing a whole new wardrobe, and skinny. I'm glad I don't know what I'm talking about. I can't stand the, uh, "normal" high anxiety lifestyle. I keep rollin' more my way, the zen way, and I'm here to tell you, it's GOOD. (say that real slow)

If you want to lose weight, you simply have to burn more calories than you take in. Most things really are that simple (life can get you that way sometimes).

Sure I exercised more, ate better, and made a conscious effort to lose the weight. That's how you burn more than you take in. But the beauty is in what I didn't do!

I didn't stop myself from feasting on a holiday meal (or any meal for that matter). I slowly cut back on my portions and snacks, but if I ate too much, or finished off that brand new bag of potato chips ... I was HAPPY! I was thankful for being able to "get away with it", because overall, in the long run, I'd consciously started to take in less than I burned.

Big, juicy bacon cheeseburger - no guilt. Didn't go to the gym today? No guilt. Didn't ride my bike? No guilt. There was nothing to feel guilty about. I didn't miss a deadline. I didn't screw it all up. I didn't set myself back. No guilt, because I never failed, not even once.

I should repeat this important point again: NO GUILT! Because I never failed, not even once.

All the pressure to do, do, do and be, be, be is pure BS! And deep down inside, you're the one cracking the whip. So let off. Quit riding yourself. Treat yourself good instead. When you let go of the pressure to DO IT NOW, you'll be amazed at what you will accomplish. I know I have.

Leave all that high anxiety rushing around to Tony Robbins and the corporate middle managers who think they're still in high school. Let them TRY. Let them WORK HARD. Then take your skinny self down to the pool and have a cocktail.

What Does This Have to do With Pooh Bear?

I'll get to Pooh Bear in my next post.
