Getting (Un) Organized v. Waiving the White Flag
As we started our getting (un) organized project to build a better system for organizing for adders, I discovered that I have too much going on. It's true! Too often I jump head-first into every idea that hits my brain, and as you know, being an adder ... that's A LOT of ideas!
I've been looking at my mind map to prioritize my projects and attempt to discover what, if anything, can I eliminate and/or put further into the future, so everything I'm working on receives more focus. Here's a little secret I've discovered ...
Now don't go blabbing this to everyone you know. They won't understand, because it goes against conventional wisdom. They'll tell you it'll kill your motivation, increase your procrastination, and be completely counter-productive. They may even cite countless books and "experts" that agree with them, while it's hard to find any, if at all, that will agree with the secret I'm about to tell you.
But ... either they don't have attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder, or they're insistent trying to OVERCOME their adhd "deficiencies". In my opinion, trying to overcome everything takes up too much time and effort. I rather work WITH my ADHD. What's the secret?
Tomorrow actually exists!
Yes, that's right! You really DO HAVE TOMORROW! Generally speaking, as an adder, you have many more ideas and tasks floating through your mind that you want to accomplish. It takes a lot of time and energy to try to get all of it done! You end up getting parts of many things done, but in the end, very little accomplished. Then to top it off, you burn half your time trying to keep it all organized!
Join me in learning how to put things off until tomorrow! We can focus on today's tasks today, and work on tomorrow's tasks tomorrow. Keep your mind map going, and don't forget to check off your tasks as complete when accomplished. In a period of a few weeks, you'll start see so many tasks and projects checked as complete, you'll get a new feeling of accomplishment that maybe you've never experienced before.
Keep adding your new ideas to your map. Don't be afraid of adding everything you think up! If your map starts to look overwhelming, take a deep breath, and relax. Tell yourself you'll do it when the time comes, and focus on the task currently at hand.
So in light of my new discovery, that tomorrow DOES exist, I'll be making a few changes here on A Morsel of Genius. First, I officially raise the white flag on my "Getting (Un) Organized" project. I have some great ideas to share, and I'll be able to present them better when I have enough time to properly focus on them. I'll also be eliminating a couple categories, because I simply have too many to reasonably write about. With fewer categories to cover, I'll be able to offer better, more informative information to all.
Now you know the little secret about getting more done when you have attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder. Put off for tomorrow what doesn't NEED to be done today. You're not procrastinating ... what you are really doing, is ... PRIORITIZING!
